Marc Ilgen asked:

When you first purchase your cellphone, you probably notice that the display background looks pretty standard and not very exciting. At the very least, it would be nice to be able to put a more interesting background image, like a picture of a warm sandy beach or some ski slopes. Or, how about putting a picture of your girlfriend or favorite party shot?

Well, the cellphone world has good news for you: you can do all of this using custom wallpapers. Custom wallpapers are simply small image files that you download onto your cellphone, and then you configure your cellphone to display the image as a background to your cellphone display. The content of these wallpaper images is limited only by your imagination. You can put images that are very personal to you, like pictures of your friends or family, or you can put images that show off your tastes in music, movies, movie stars, favorite places, etc. basically, if it can be placed into an image the size of your cellphone display, then it can be loaded as a wallpaper into your phone.

So what format are the images? Well, this depends on the type of phone you have. And it should be stated that not every cellphone will support custom wallpapers, so check with your internet service provider to see what sort of wallpapers your phone supports.

Once you discover what type of wallpapers your phone can download, you will need to know how to get the wallpapers onto your phone. Some phones will allow you to put your very own digital pictures onto your phone via a data cable. Again, contact your cellular service provider to see if this is possible with your cellphone.

But most of the time, it is a much easier option to download wallpapers from a large ringtone and wallpaper service. It is possible to buy individual wallpapers for anywhere between $1 and $3 each. But if you look around on the web, you can find some services that give you some free wallpapers to start with. You can also find some services that allow you to upload your own images through your web browser, and the service will convert the image into a wallpaper for your phone.

But eventually, if you want to get a continuous supply of wallpapers, you will need to pay to get access. For a small monthly fee you can download lots of wallpapers (and ringtones) to your cellphone. That way you can change your backgrounds to keep your phone fresh and to continually express your individuality to the outside world.

Duncan Kelly asked:

Cellphone usage worldwide numbers in the billions. If there is a possibility of injury from these devices, then a lot of people will be affected.

A cellphone is actually a radio transmitter and receiver. It sends and recieves radio frequency electromagnetic waves. The received signals are fairly low level, so I will concentrate on the signal transmitted from the cellphone.

Cellphones transmit mainly at frequencies of 900, 1800 and 1900 Megahertz (MHz). A microwave oven cooks food using a frequency of 915 MHz or 2450 MHz. In other words, the food is not fussy about what frequency you use, as long as it’s in that range, say 900 to 2500 MHz. Which means, cellphones use Microwave Oven frequencies.

A microwave oven puts out a power of about 1000 watts, on average. If you put your head in a microwave oven, it will take about an hour to cook to a nice sizzling crisp.

A cellphone transmits at a power of about 3 watts, and it self adjusts it’s power continually to compensate for poor signal paths, up to a maximum of 5 to 7 watts. Not much, but there’s a twist…

A microwave oven spreads it’s radiation over the whole oven cavity, so that the food is cooked uniformly.

A cellphone has a tiny, array antenna, measuring maybe 2 or 3 cm in length, and it’s right next to your ear. So 5 watts of power is radiating into your head into an area of perhaps 3cm by 0.75cm. That’s a lot of power when concentrated in such a small area.

The cellphone manufacturers have said that they have put “shields” into their phones to keep radiation risks to a minimum.

If you turn around while making a call, does the call cut out or the audio disappear at any time? No, it doesn’t. Radio waves, like light waves, travel in a straight line. If your head got in between the cellphone and the cell transmitter tower, then the signal should be blocked (shielded) by the shield in the phone, as the waves can’t bend once they’ve left the phone.

Which means that those microwaves are going through your head, all the time.

Whenever you’re “on the phone,” you are being microwaved just like the roast in your microwave oven.

So What Can You Do?

If you’ve got a handsfree kit, use it if it’s practical. Don’t use bluetooth – it also transmits radiowaves close to your head, albeit at different frequencies.

If your phone has a loudspeaker, switch it on and speak at a distance. The guy on the other side will still hear you perfectly.

Buy phones with a low Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)

Don’t let children make long calls. Their soft skuls are much more affected than the hard heads of adults. (See “The Stewart Report.”)

Swop ears every minute or so, to give your head time to “cool down” on that side.

Don’t hold the phone next to your ear while connecting – this is when it transmits at maximum power.

Avoid making calls in weak reception areas, as the cellphone will boost it’s output power to make sure it stays connected.

Keep your conversations short.

Use SMS’s whenever possible.

Avoid sleeping with a cellphone under your pillow. Cellphones transmit even when you are not using them, exchanging data and checking signal strength, at regular intervals.

Avoid carrying the cellphone close to your body. This applies especially to the ****** pocket of people with heart problems.

Use a landline whenever possible.

Many people have proven health problems from cellphone usage, brain tumors being the most common, followed by loss of memory, impaired brain function and other symptons. Usually these symptons take a few years to surface.

By taking the simple precautions listed above, we can actually save our lives. Tell your friends too. There’s a lot of people out there that need to know these facts.

You can thank me later!

Joel Walsh asked:

How often do you find something at a store and wonder how much cheaper you could get it online? Now you don’t have to wonder–you can call 1-888-FRU-SHOP. That’s the number for Frucall, a first-of-its-kind price-comparison shopping service currently in Beta.

How Does Frucall Work?

Frucall is pretty simple to use despite all the technology behind it:

*Call 1-888-FRU-SHOP from any phone in the US.

At the prompt, enter the product’s bar code number. That’s the number directly below the bar code. (Hint: don’t forget the first and last digits, which may be offset from the rest of the code.)

*A computerized voice confirms the product’s name and states the price, as well as shipping information.

*The whole process takes about ten seconds. There are no signups, no downloads, and funky add-on services or charges to your phone bill.

Beta Limitations

Frucall has been launched to the public in Beta mode, though it has already been tested for more than two months on an invitation-only basis. The Beta service works well, though there are still a few limitations:

During the initial Beta period, Frucall only searches Amazon. The designers, however, are planning on adding additional sites soon. They eventually expect it to become an internet-wide ecommerce price comparison service for cell phones.

Because the Beta only searches Amazon, you can’t use it for things that aren’t sold on Amazon. The Beta is most valuable when you’re out shopping for clothes, appliances, electronics, books, music, DVDs and stuff like that, but for now you cannot use it for grocery shopping.

You won’t be able to buy the product using your phone until this feature is implemented sometime in summer 2006.

First-Ever Voice-Activated Mobile Price Comparison Service

Mobile phone technologies are all the rage these days, from movies to games to weather reports to shopping. For the most part, these technologies have a dedicated core of people who tend to be very comfortable navigating all the options on the little screens and touch pads of their cell phones. Right now, mobile applications aren’t as appealing to people who are less nimble-fingered, less technologically savvy–or just less patient.

Frucall, however, might just be the first mobile application both you and your grandmother could use. The usability factor for Frucall is high since it’s all voice-activated, and, ultimately, that’s what cell phones were made for: talking, not running software.

Looking out for people who actually like mobile software, Frucall’s designers are working on a WAP (mobile application) version as well, which will be available in a couple of months.

In the meantime, Frucall’s voice-activated interface is a blessing for die-hard cheapskates: they can call the toll-free number from a payphone without even having to pay cellphone airtime.

In short, if you’re serious about saving money, you just got another tool in your toolbox.

Koz Huseyin asked:

There are many benefits to connecting your phone to your PC. Thanks to the two technologies being merged now, you can enjoy more ease by using your mobile with your PC.

In this article, you will find:

* Benefits of Connecting Your Mobile Phone To Your PC

* Ways of Connecting Your Mobile Phone To Your PC

* What You Need To Be Able To Connect Your Mobile Phone To Your PC

* Benefits of Connecting Your Phone To Your PC

By connecting your PC and mobile phone together, you gain access to simplifying life. Your mobile may be too small to allow you to write a long text with ease, but connecting your PC and your cell phone, allow you to write your text with your PC’s keyboard! This is not the only benefit, in fact more and more benefits are being found now.

You can transfer play lists between phone and PC. You can backup your pictures and video. You can use your phone as a gateway for internet access, if you find there is no connectivity on the home phone line. You can even control your PC with your phone, and use your mobile phone as a top end web cam! All these obviously depend on what your phone and the software capabilities are.

* Ways of Connecting Your Mobile Phone To Your PC

You have several options of how you can connect your PC to your cell phone. Again all of the connection options depend on your phones capabilities.

Most phones allow you to connect via infrared to your PC. However, connecting with infrared to your computer does have drawbacks. You may need to buy extra equipment to be able to connect your mobile phone to your PC with infrared. Also the transfer speeds a very slow compared with many connecting technologies available on phones today. Infrared connectivity also does have its limitations. For example, you can not use your mobile as a web cam, as the speeds of infrared are too slow.

Bluetooth is a faster technology than infrared. There are many advantages to Bluetooth that make it a good way to connect your cell phone to your computer. The first is that of the speed, next is the ease with which you can connect to your PC and start transferring files. The downside is that not all computers come equipped with Bluetooth connectivity. So, you may need to buy a device for your computer that enables Bluetooth on your PC. They are easy to find and the cost is very low, in most cases.

The de-facto choice of the person who wants connectivity with ease and offer many other benefits is via USB connectivity. All new computers come with USB, and most new phones offer USB connectivity, which is a match made in heaven! You can simply get a phone, which in most cases comes with the software to start using your PC with your mobile phone. You also get a USB cable with your phone, so from the get go, you can start connecting! Some phones may not have this option however. I have found many of the Sony Ericsson range of phones and other brands do give you all you need to start connecting your mobile phone to your PC.

* What You Need To Be Able To Connect Your Mobile Phone To Your PC

In the case of a USB enabled mobile phone, and a fairly new computer with USB available, connecting your PC and phone should be an easy task. The first thing you need is the phone, the USB cable, the software and a PC with USB enabled functionality.

After you install the software, connect the cables and set the phone up, you are ready to start using the benefits of mobile and PC connectivity! Now when your phone needs charging and you can not find the charger, you can charge your phone up, thanks to your PC and USB!

Caroline Telford asked:

The high speed Internet scene in the United Kingdom is currently on the fast track. Fortunately for the subscribers, they have a wide array of choices when it comes to the companies offering high-speed broadband Internet connection.

As compared to dial-up access via modem, high speed Internet offers a much faster download speed and a better browsing experience.

It is projected that by the end of the year, more than two million subscribers would have switched to high-speed broadband Internet connection.

ADSL Connections in the UK

ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line is one of the most common forms of DSL used. With ADSL, here are the advantages that subscribers can enjoy:

1. Your existing Internet connection can go though your existing telephone line.

2. You can use your existing telephone line, both for connecting to the Internet and making telephone calls.

3. Unlike analogue modems, you can have an active connection without charging the device.

4. With ADSL, you can have a data transfer speed which is 15 to 20 times higher than the connection speed which is utilized in an analogue modem.

5. Another advantage of ADSL connection is that you can browse through different web pages without telephone impulses charging.

6. If you are planning to switch to ADSL and you had dial-up connection previously – your telephone bill will be significantly lowered.

7. You will have 24/7 access to the Internet if you decide to use high-speed broadband or ADSL.

8. There is a better overall browsing experience with ADSL.

9. The installation procedure is simpler.

10. Changing to an ADSL provider gives you more benefits overall.

Are You on the Lookout for a High Speed Broadband Internet Provider?

Since broadband Internet in the UK is on the rise, now is as good a time as any to consider upgrading your current Internet connection.

If you are still using a dial-up connection, get in touch with the different companies offering high-speed broadband Internet service.

Here are the things that you need to take into consideration:

- How much is the monthly subscription?

- Aside from the monthly fee, are there hidden costs and charges that I should be aware of?

- What is the limit when it comes to downloading data?

- What special discounts are offered by the company?

- What is the connection speed offered by the high-speed broadband Internet connection provider?

- How much can you use your broadband connection?

- Will you be able to bundle up your high-speed broadband connection with your ADSL2 and cable connection? If you can, how much of a discount will be provided for you?

By making a comparison of these factors, you can easily determine which high speed broadband service provider offers the best value for your money.

Take the time in making sure that you will have everything that you need from a high-speed broadband service provider – all your efforts will be worth it once you already have high-speed Internet access, 24/7.

Caroline Telford asked:

For anyone who is interested in a high speed connection—and who isn’t, these days—you can choose from either ADSL internet or cable broadband. Is there a reason to choose one over the other? Why do some people have a preference of one over the other? In most cases it is a personal choice, but there may be times when one choice is better or more necessary than the other.

Sometimes the cost factor determines whether an internet user will choose ADSL internet or cable broadband. ADSL internet requires a connection to British Telecom so a user that has a different provider or has no telephone service at all will be unable to choose ADSL internet service. Likewise, if one has no telephone connection whether by choice or because of living accommodations it will be impossible to utilize ADSL internet.

In today’s modern world many people may have a mobile phone and cable service but no landline. That may be because they do not talk on the telephone enough to invest in a regular telephone line or because they live in shared accommodations and are unable to install their own telephone line. Even those who do not have regular telephone service usually have cable service for their television and are able to connect to cable broadband. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to have cable television to connect to cable broadband, butmost people choose to have cable television, so in most cases it is more convenient to choose cable broadband because the cable connection is already in place.

Sometimes people may have to choose ADSL internet or cable broadband because of the area in which they live. Those in remote areas may not have access to both services and may have to choose one or the other. Although some people have their own preferences, when it comes to speed, cable broadband is faster than ADSL internet and does not require a telephone line. If you live in shared quarters it may be more convenient to have cable broadband, especially if you are unable to install your own telephone line.

Whether you choose ADSL internet or cable broadband, you are still going to find a fast connection to enhance your business or personal online experience. Making the choice between ADSL internet and cable broadband is a personal decision that must be based on your own personal situation or preferences. Each high speed method has its own advantages and disadvantages, and no matter which way you go there may be times when you will lose your connection because of equipment problems. If you lose cable or telephone service, you are not going to be able to access the internet.

Many businesses are choosing cable broadband instead of ADSL internet because of the faster connection speed. The speed of connection, however, will depend on how many computers are connected to your network and the speed of the processor. Whether for home or business use, a high speed connection is only as good as the speed of the processor and the ability of the computer to which it is connected.
